Today I’m joining the Friday Photo at Delicious Baby to bring you a picture from my travels with story behind it.
Just after Christmas we visited my husband’s family who live in the countryside in Warwickshire. For some fresh air after all the eating and drinking we went for a walk on Edge Hill, starting near The Castle Inn. At first the view from the top of the hill was masked by the trees, but then we reached open ground where the land spread out before us for miles.
The hill is well known as the scene of The Battle of Edge Hill during the English Civil war, when in 1642, the Parliamentarians clashed with the Royalists supporting King Charles 1. At the start of the battle, the Royalists commanded the high ground on the hill, but in order to engage the Parliamentarians in battle they moved down to fight on the land below. This is the view the commanders must have had as the battle commenced.
As the days are so often grey here, I enjoy walking on a clear, bright day like this with cold air to blow away the cobwebs. I love the silhouette of the lone tree against the winter sky.
