St Kitts is one half of the St Kitts and Nevis nation that likes to be known as “two islands, one paradise”. St Kitts is the larger of the two islands, relaxed, unspoiled and a great choice if you are looking for an authentic Caribbean experience.
Since the island stopped producing sugar 15 years ago, large areas of land have been left uncultivated. This created a lush, green landscape where views of the sea are never far away.
I want to show you the beauty of St Kitts in pictures, the instagrammable photos of St Kitts. Learn the places you can find the views and landscapes to get some great photos yourself.

1. Timothy Hill and the South East Peninsula
Driving out of Basseterre, the road to the south-east peninsula takes you over the crest of the hill to get this fabulous view from the top of Timothy Hill. On either side of the narrowest point of the peninsula you can look down on the beaches of Friar’s Bay North and South.
In the distance the island of Nevis rises with cloud hanging over its peak. On this Best of St Kitts tour you’ll see landmarks of cultural, natural, and historical significance
The photo might give the impression that I was standing all alone. In fact as with many postcard viewpoints, there was a busy parking area where all the tours stop and a few souvenir stands thrown in. Still let’s preserve the illusion of calm and tranquility shall we?

2. Overlooking Frigate Bay and the Marriott Resort
While most people take the popular photo from Timothy Hill looking down towards the south-east peninsula, I suspect most forget to look in the opposite direction. There’s a great view over Frigate Bay and the island capital of Basseterre.
On the Atlantic side is the Marriott Resort hotel and the beach at North Frigate Bay. While the beaches on the Atlantic coast are normally too rough for swimming, there is a breakwater in front of the Marriott that ensures the beach is safe and calm for swimming.

3. The Marina at Christophe Harbour
As you continue driving down the southeast peninsula, you’ll look down on the Christophe Harbour development. This will bring more facilities to this part of St Kitts over the next year or two.
The marina is still being developed, but as you approach from the hill above, you can look down and see the super yachts already making use of what was once a salt lake before it was dredged to make the marina.

4. Friar’s Bay looking towards Shipwreck Beach Bar
Friar’s Bay is one of the best beaches on St Kitts, with a long stretch of golden sand and a couple of great beach bars. At one end you’ll find the upmarket Carambola Beach Club with a terrace restaurant, shady seating and plenty of sunloungers, while at the other is the more rustic Shipwreck Beach Bar with a chilled atmosphere serving food and drink all day. Watch out for the monkeys that live near the beach bar.

5. The Old Sugar Mill near Kittitian Hill
All around the island you’ll see ruins of the old sugar mills, with tumble down stone buildings and conical windmills. The windmills drove the metal wheel that crushed the cane, which was then boiled down in the huge copper pans to make the sugar that was the main industry of St Kitts until only 15 years ago.
I spotted this old mill on the northern coast road close to Arthur’s beach bar and the Kittitian Hill estate and hopped over the gate into the overgrown grounds to take an atmospheric photo with the clouds brooding on the slopes of Mount Liamuiga.

6. Brimstone Fort
The fort, set high on Brimstone Hill is part of St Kitts’ colonial heritage from the 17th and 18th century when the British and the French struggled to dominate the rich sugar islands of the Caribbean. The best views are from the stone citadel where you can walk around the ramparts with cannons pointing in all directions and the Dutch island of Sint Eustatius in the distance.
This panoramic landmark tour includes Brimstone Hill and explores the island’s incredible scenery

7. Ottley’s Plantation Inn
I stayed at Ottley’s Plantation Inn, the only old plantation inn of its kind on St Kitts, although there are a few other plantation hotels on Nevis. The hotel is family run and preserves an old world charm of the plantation lifestyle in elegance and tranquility with beautifully kept gardens. There’s a nature walk that runs through the rainforest, but I mostly enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and views of the sea from my cottage window. Update: Ottley’s Plantation Inn has now closed

8. The Pavilion and Sandy Bank Bay
The Pavilion is the private clubhouse for the Christophe Harbour development of villas and bungalows and the landscaped gardens and pool area overlook one of the most untouched beaches on the island at Sandy Bank Bay.
Being on the Atlantic side the public beach is not recommended to swim due to the heavy waves, although you’ll sometimes find students surfing here, but it makes a gorgeous spot to look out to sea. Does this sunlounger have your name on it?

9. Independence Square in Basseterre
This tranquil grassy square with trees and shrubs is the place in Basseterre where the locals go to relax and hang out. But the pretty view hides a darker history, since this was once the slave market, where slaves were bought and sold.
Look at the old stone and wood buildings around the square and you’ll see small grilles and doorways at pavement level, leading to the basement rooms where slaves would sleep. On market day they would be brought into the square, washed in the fountain and then their skin oiled for the best appearance.

10. Sunset at Salt Plage
Salt Plage is a sophisticated beach bar, part of the Christophe Harbour development, that is one of the favourite spots for both locals and visitors to watch the sunset. Take a seat on the deck or the jetty, order a cold beer or a cocktail like the Mauby Mule and enjoy the mellow reggae – there was a live band when we were there. Order the best burger on the island or some sugarcane shrimps and you’re all set to watch the sun go down.

Those are some lovely views of the island! Also, great information about what to see on St. Kitts. Hopefully, the monkeys at Shipwreck Beach Bar weren't too much of a disturbance.
